Moving to a new place starts with getting a quote. This is where a moving company figures out how much it will cost based on what and how much you’re moving. After you agree to the quote, you’ll be connected with a moving specialist. This person will be your go-to for any questions and will help keep everything organized. Next, you’ll get an Order of Service. This is a document that lists all the services you’re getting, along with the dates and prices. On moving day, the movers will take care of your items, loading them into the truck and transporting them to your new home. You’ll also receive a Bill of Lading. Think of this as a receipt that also explains the move’s details, like when and where your stuff will be delivered. The final step is the movers unloading your things into your new home. You will check each item off the Bill of Lading as they are unloaded from the truck. You will do a walkthrough of all items and confirm the completion of the move with your team leader.

The cost of hiring a moving company can vary significantly. According to MoveBuddha, “The average cost of hiring movers in Virginia is $107 per hour with an average total move cost between $396 and $3,528, depending on the size and distance of your move.” Other factors that affect the cost include the time and number of movers required, the distance, the use of elevators or stairs, and the handling of bulky items. Labor costs, optional services such as packing or storage, and insurance also contribute to the overall cost.
At HuberWilmot, we provide personalized and transparent pricing for both local and long-distance moves. Our quotes are tailored to your specific moving requirements, considering all the factors that influence the cost. We aim to offer competitive pricing without compromising on service quality, ensuring that you receive a fair and detailed quote.
Most moving companies provide a free, no-obligation quote of the costs associated with your move. These quotes typically include all the services and fees involved, helping you plan your budget effectively. It’s common for these quotes to cover various aspects of the move, such as labor costs, transportation, packing services, and any additional services you might require. The accuracy of these quotes often depends on the thoroughness of the initial assessment, which can be done through in-home or video-call evaluations. Only trust a quote that involves a survey of your items, never one that comes from a blind estimate given out over the phone.
HuberWilmot Moving & Storage takes pride in offering detailed and accurate quotes for all our moving services. We believe in full transparency, ensuring that our quotes include all costs and services without any hidden fees. Our team conducts a thorough survey of all of your items to understand your specific moving needs. This allows us to provide you with a precise and comprehensive quote, tailored to your individual requirements. “Ensuring our customers fully understand their moving costs upfront is crucial for a stress-free experience,” states our owner, Eric Wilmot. Our goal is to ensure that you have a clear understanding of the costs involved, helping you make informed decisions for a stress-free moving experience.
Many moving companies offer both local and long-distance moving services, but Forbes does point out, “Some moving companies may not have the capacity, or meet the legal requirements, to get you to a new location across the country.” It’s best to do your research before hiring a moving company to make sure they meet your requirements. Local moves are typically defined as relocations within the same state or a shorter distance, while long-distance moves involve crossing state lines. The services provided for local and long-distance moves include loading, unloading, and transportation. Most movers will offer additional, optional services, such as packing and unpacking or storage.
At HuberWilmot Moving & Storage, we specialize in both local and long-distance moving services, ensuring a seamless experience regardless of your destination. We understand the unique challenges and requirements of different types of moves. Our team is equipped with the expertise and resources to handle the complexities of long-distance moving, as well as the local knowledge necessary for local moves. “Our commitment is to provide a moving service that’s as smooth and stress-free as unpacking a well-labeled box,” says our owner, Eric Wilmot. Whether you’re moving to a new neighborhood or across the country, we provide tailored services to meet your specific moving needs, ensuring a smooth and stress-free transition to your new home.
Moving.com expresses, “Packing material and moving supplies are your best friends for the duration of the move.” Many moving companies offer comprehensive packing services, including the provision of necessary packing materials. These materials typically include boxes, tape, bubble wrap, and other supplies needed to securely pack your belongings. Packing and unpacking services are optional add-on services to your move. This option is particularly beneficial for those who prefer a hassle-free move, as it ensures all items are professionally packed and protected. Be sure to tell the moving company that you want packing and unpacking as soon as possible so it can be worked into your moving process and quote.
We offer a full range of packing services to complement our moving solutions. We provide all the necessary packing materials and can take care of the entire packing process. Our experienced team uses the best materials and techniques to ensure that your belongings are safely and securely packed, regardless of their size or fragility. “Packing is more than just putting things in boxes; it’s about protecting memories and essentials for a new beginning,” states our owner, Eric Wilmot. This service is designed to save you time and reduce the stress of moving, allowing you to focus on other aspects of your relocation. If you want packing supplies, be sure to make use of one of our packing bundles to save money and ensure that you have everything you need.
Moving companies need to be licensed and insured. Being licensed means that the company is legally authorized to operate in its city and state. Insurance is a critical component, as it provides protection for both the company and its clients. To make sure that your mover is licensed, you can verify a mover’s USDOT license number using the Federal Movers Database.
HuberWilmot Moving & Storage holds the full spectrum of required licenses and insurance, ensuring your peace of mind throughout the moving process. Our adherence to the highest standards is showcased by our USDOT license number 3444872, alongside additional licenses such as MC number 1119818, Intrastate for Hire number 721, and Local for Hire number 5993. This comprehensive licensing means we operate within all legal requirements. We are also fully insured with Workers Comp and General Liability, protecting both our customers and our team during the move. “Ensuring the safety and security of every move is our top priority. Our licensure and insurance are the foundation of that commitment,” says our owner, Eric Wilmot. “This robust coverage guarantees that we are equipped to handle any situation with utmost professionalism and care, making your move as smooth and worry-free as possible.”
Reviewing a mover’s reviews is a critical step for a successful and stress-free move. Google Reviews aren’t the end-all-be-all, but they are a good metric to show you the overall experiences of their customers. To get a good understanding, be sure to look at how many reviews they have, how recent their last review was, their overall score, and whether they reply to negative reviews.
At HuberWilmot Moving & Storage, we take pride in our reputation for providing high-quality moving services in Northern Virginia. We encourage you to see for yourself by reading through our Google Reviews. Our crew is trained to provide industry-best customer care to you throughout your move. “Our Google Reviews reflect the dedication and professionalism of our team,” states our owner, Eric Wilmot. We strive to exceed expectations with every move, ensuring our clients receive the best possible service from start to finish.
Your items will be protected during your move with moving valuation. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration explains, “Under Federal law, interstate movers must offer two different liability options referred to as valuation coverage: Full Value Protection and Released Value.” Limited Valuation Coverage, also known as “released value protection,” means you’re covered for 60 cents per pound per article, typically at no extra cost. Many movers realize that this isn’t enough coverage for most people, which is why many offer the Full Value Protection. This covers the full replacement value of items at an additional cost. If an item is lost or damaged, the company may repair, replace, or offer a cash settlement based on the current market price.
HuberWilmot Moving & Storage offers multiple valuation coverage options to ensure the protection of your belongings with the option you want. We provide both Limited Valuation Coverage and Full Value Protection Plan options. For belongings that are worth $100 per pound per item, you can declare them as an Item of Extraordinary Value to ensure that you get the protection you need. “Ensuring our clients’ possessions are fully protected is a cornerstone of our service,” our owner, Eric Wilmot, emphasizes. “We offer a range of coverage options to match every client’s needs, giving them peace of mind during their move.”
What is an Inventory?
The driver will generally inventory your shipment as he or she loads it (although it is not required by law). When completed, the inventory provides a detailed, descriptive listing of your household goods, along with the condition of each item when received by the mover.
Be sure that everything listed on the inventory is correct. This is not always the easiest task, as you will find things written on the inventory such as “PBO,” which means “packed by owner.” The contents of this carton cannot be listed, as the driver is simply not able to see inside each box. You will also sometimes find “CP” on a line item in the inventory, which means “carrier packed” container.
You may also notice, in the middle column on your inventory form, a line that has many seemingly random letters and numbers associated with a specific item. This is where a driver uses inventory code to make note of the condition of an item. To understand this code, you can refer to the top of the inventory sheet for a legend that will explain what each code means. For example, SC means scratched; C means chipped; the number 3 refers to the right side of piece; and 8 refers to the top of the piece. This is a simple (and consistent) way for the driver to make note of any irregularities or existing damage.
Remember, this inventory is for you to keep track of what is loaded, and the condition of each item. If damage occurs on a certain piece during the loading process, make a note of the inventory tag number on that item and indicate it in the far-right hand column on the line that corresponds with that piece. This is the document that will be scrutinized when the claims process is initiated, so it is important to have the damage clearly noted.
This inventory should also be used at-destination when your shipment is delivered. Use the inventory to verify the articles that are delivered and, again, note an exception to the condition of any items as they are brought into your home. Point out the damage to the driver.
What often occurs is that a piece of furniture has been in your home for many years and you grow accustomed to looking at it in a certain place and in a certain light. When you bring that same piece into your new home, you may notice damage that may have been there for a long time. The driver will have noted the scratch or chip at your origin residence. If you are not sure if it was existing damage or new damage, ask your driver to explain the condition of the piece as he noted it on the inventory during the loading process. This is the quickest way to distinguish new damage from what was there all along.
Our drivers are incredibly careful about the way they handle your items, and the inventory is their safeguard against potentially fraudulent damage claims. Use this inventory to your advantage in making sure that you are protected, just as the driver uses it to protect himself or herself.
